Barcode, substitution, and the receipt. Say the problem instead of waiting on the machine.
When the self-checkout sticks, say that the barcode will not scan or the discount did not apply. The checkout episode is that minute at the machine.
Click and collect starts with the order number. If a bag has a substitution, decide whether the replacement is fine, then look at the receipt for the difference.
Keep the receipt if you might return something. Shelf prices and the total are not always the same once tax is added. The Canadian GST episode, publishing later this fortnight, is the tax-line version of the same habit.
